Air source heat pumps are taking the lead because, for many homes, they are the practical option. Not always the flashiest option. Not always the theoretical winner on a spreadsheet. The practical one.

Compared with ground source heat pumps, air source systems are usually cheaper, faster and less disruptive to install. With good design, modern air source heat pumps can deliver excellent comfort and efficiency.

That direction is especially clear in new homes under the Future Homes Standard, where heating and building fabric can be designed together.

Air source heat pumps are popular because they suit more properties than ground source systems, need less installation disruption, can qualify for grant support and can perform very well when designed around heat loss, emitters and flow temperature.

Air source is usually easier to install

Ground source heat pumps can be excellent, but they need ground loops or boreholes. That means space, access, groundworks and cost.

Air source heat pumps need a suitable outdoor unit location, pipe routes and proper design, but they do not usually need the same ground disruption.

For many existing homes, that makes air source the more realistic route.

The efficiency gap has narrowed

Ground source systems were historically seen as the premium efficiency option.

They can still be very efficient. But modern air source heat pumps have improved significantly, and the real-world result depends heavily on design.

An air source heat pump with excellent design can beat a poorly designed system that looked better on paper. A real heat pump installation is a more useful test than the headline figures alone.

Grants support the decision

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can reduce upfront cost for eligible installations.

The standard heat pump grant is £7,500, and from 21 July 2026 an enhanced £9,000 grant is due for qualifying off-gas-grid oil and LPG heated homes. Always check the official GOV.UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme before relying on grant details.

The grant helps, but it should not be the reason to skip design. A funded bad installation is still a bad installation.

Poor installations still hold the industry back

The biggest problem for air source heat pumps is not the technology. It is poor design and installation.

Common issues include:

  • heat loss guessed rather than calculated
  • radiators not checked
  • high flow temperatures
  • poor pipe sizing
  • weak hot water design
  • confusing controls
  • poor handover

These mistakes make good technology look bad. That is frustrating, because when heat pumps are done properly, they can be brilliant.

Is air source right for every property?

No.

Some properties need more work before a heat pump makes sense. Some have tricky outdoor unit locations. Some have high heat loss or radiator limitations. Some customers need a staged plan.

The honest answer is property-specific.

That is why a survey matters. The aim is not to sell an air source heat pump to everyone. The aim is to design the right system for the home.

Why design still decides the result

Air source heat pumps are taking the lead because they are practical, scalable and increasingly well supported.

But the best results still come from good design.
