Power Flushing

Restore the Performance of Your Heating System

Remove sludge, debris and circulation problems from your central heating system with professional power flushing.

If your radiators are taking a long time to warm up, have cold spots, or your boiler seems to be struggling to heat your home, sludge inside the heating system could be the cause.

Power flushing is a deep clean for your central heating system. Using specialist equipment, we circulate cleaning chemicals around the pipework, radiators and boiler to remove sludge, debris and corrosion deposits that build up over time.

At Vector Heat, we've carried out power flushing on everything from small domestic systems to large commercial heating systems across Lincolnshire.

What Causes Sludge in a Heating System?

Most central heating systems contain steel radiators. Over time, oxygen in the water reacts with the metal and creates corrosion.

This corrosion forms a black magnetic sludge known as magnetite.

As sludge builds up it can settle in radiators, pipework, pumps and heat exchangers, restricting water flow around the system.

Common signs of sludge include:

  • Cold spots at the bottom of radiators
  • Some radiators not heating properly
  • Noisy boilers or pumps
  • Frequent boiler lockouts
  • Dirty black water when radiators are bled
  • Slow warm-up times
  • Higher heating bills

Left untreated, sludge can reduce efficiency and contribute to costly component failures.

How Does Power Flushing Work?

We connect a specialist power flushing machine to your heating system and circulate water at high velocity through the pipework.

Cleaning chemicals are added to break down sludge and corrosion deposits while the machine removes the debris from the system.

Each radiator is cleaned individually to help ensure deposits are removed throughout the system.

Once the system is clean, we thoroughly flush it with fresh water before adding a corrosion inhibitor to help protect the system in the future.

Where appropriate, we may also recommend fitting a magnetic system filter to help prevent sludge from building up again.

Is Power Flushing Worth It?

Not every heating system needs a power flush.

In some cases, a chemical flush or targeted repair may be more appropriate. We will always assess the condition of your heating system and provide honest advice on the best solution.

A power flush can often:

  • Improve radiator performance
  • Restore circulation around the system
  • Reduce boiler noise
  • Improve efficiency
  • Help protect pumps, valves and heat exchangers
  • Extend the life of the heating system

When Should You Consider a Power Flush?

A power flush may be worth considering if:

  • Your radiators have cold spots
  • Several radiators stay cool while others get hot
  • Your heating system is noisy
  • Your boiler regularly develops circulation-related faults
  • The system water is heavily contaminated
  • You're replacing an old boiler
  • You're installing a heat pump

Modern heat pumps require good water quality and unrestricted flow rates. Cleaning an older heating system can often be an important part of preparing a property for a heat pump installation.

Why Choose Vector Heat?

Our engineers have extensive experience working on heating systems of all ages and sizes.

We don't automatically recommend power flushing. Instead, we'll investigate the cause of the problem and advise on the most appropriate solution for your system.

Whether you need a full power flush, a chemical clean, a system filter installation or simply some expert advice, we're here to help.

Power-Flushing Information

Common Power-Flushing Questions

Helpful advice from the Vector Heat team.

Do I Need a Power-Flush?

Common signs include radiators that are cold at the bottom, excessive boiler noise, repeated pump failures, poor circulation, blocked radiators or dirty black water when bleeding radiators.

If you're unsure, Vector Heat can assess the condition of your heating system and advise whether a power-flush is likely to be beneficial.

Why Power-Flushing?

Dirt, debris, silt and sludge can seriously affect the efficiency and reliability of central heating systems.

Power-flushing is a process which cleans out the heating system.

Where Does the Sludge Come From?

Sometimes due to incorrect design or fittings used, a heating system begins to generate sludge.

This sludge, known as magnetite sludge, is made from iron and steel within the heating system, mostly from radiators.

As this sludge builds up it causes further chemical reactions within the system, which creates more sludge and corrosion.

How Does Power-Flushing Work?

Power-flushing is a process which uses mechanically forced water and chemicals to circulate the system at a high speed, dislodging sludge and debris.

We use top-of-the-range filtration equipment attached to our commercial-sized power-flushing machine.

The filter catches the magnetite sludge so we can remove it from the heating system without constantly flushing away the water and chemicals.

Can Power-Flushing Damage My System?

Sometimes when a central heating system is seriously corroded, power-flushing may loosen already damaged materials.

The most commonly affected components are very old radiators.

After carrying out thousands of power-flushes over the years, our team has only encountered this a handful of times, so the chances of it happening are low.

How Long Does a Power-Flush Take?

Power-flushing is not a quick process and usually takes a full day to carry out.

If My System Got Sludged Up Before, Will It Happen Again?

Power-flushing is a process that cleans out a dirty system. It does not rectify the issues that caused the sludge to form in the first place.

Our recommendation is to have the system pressurised where possible and to install a good quality central heating filter.

Our normal add-on rates for these are £100 including VAT each when carried out on the same day as the power-flush.

Should I Have a Central Heating Filter Installed?

We always recommend that a good quality central heating filter is fitted to new and existing systems.

The filter we most commonly install is the Adey MagnaClean Professional 2.

A filter helps prevent the build-up of sludge by catching it before it has a chance to circulate around the heating system and cause further corrosion.
