Boiler servicing

How Long Does a Boiler Service Take?

A straightforward gas or LPG boiler service takes 30 to 45 minutes. Oil takes 75 to 90 minutes.

Insight by Vector Heat

If the question is how long does it take to service a boiler?, a straightforward gas or LPG boiler service normally takes 30 to 45 minutes overall. An oil boiler service normally takes 75 to 90 minutes overall.

On a gas or LPG boiler, around 30 minutes is normally spent carrying out the service. The wider checks, recording the results and paperwork take another 10 to 15 minutes. Oil servicing is more involved: allow 60 to 75 minutes for the service work and another 15 minutes for the other checks and paperwork.

Those times assume the boiler is working, no fault has been reported and no new fault is discovered. A boiler service is not a race, but it is not an open-ended fault investigation either.

The Quick Answer

Appointment Useful time to allow
Routine mains gas boiler service 30-45 minutes overall
Routine LPG boiler service 30-45 minutes overall
Routine oil boiler service 75-90 minutes overall
Known boiler fault Book fault investigation time, not a routine service

Those are Vector Heat's timings for straightforward appointments. The exact service routine still follows the instructions for the make and model rather than a universal checklist.

Is a Shorter Boiler Service Automatically a Bad Service?

No. Time alone does not tell you whether a service was done properly.

Vaillant says an issue-free service can take 30 to 60 minutes and advises questions if it takes under 30. That fits what I see: a straightforward gas or LPG service normally takes 30 to 45 minutes overall.

These answers are not contradictory. Service schedules vary with heat exchangers, seals, electrodes, condensate arrangements and test results. Some modern boilers only need intrusive work when their instructions or results call for it. Older non-condensing boilers generally need opening, inspection and cleaning.

My view is simple: a 20-minute visit is not automatically poor, but the engineer should be able to explain what that boiler required and what was checked. If the answer is vague, the short time becomes more interesting.

What Happens During the Boiler Service?

A proper service is appliance-specific rather than a generic list performed in exactly the same order every time. This is why I start with the exact make and model, then follow the routine and test requirements for that boiler.

1. Questions and initial checks

I ask about fault codes, pressure loss, noises and leaks, then inspect the appliance, its location and the accessible flue.

2. The manufacturer's service routine

The engineer follows that boiler's instructions, checking components, seals, electrodes and safety devices, with cleaning or scheduled maintenance where required.

3. Flue and combustion checks

The boiler is run and tested for safe operation and the relevant combustion measurements. The procedure changes with the appliance and fuel.

4. Pressure, condensate and the expansion vessel

We check system pressure, clean the condensate trap where fitted and check or repressurise the boiler's expansion vessel when needed.

5. Final operation and service record

We test final operation, return the controls to their settings and complete the service record. I explain any defects or maintenance worth planning.

Why Can Two Gas Boiler Services Take Different Amounts of Time?

The make and model matter more than whether the boiler is called a combi, system or regular boiler. Two models from the same manufacturer can have different service requirements.

Time can also change because of:

  • the boiler's age and condition
  • whether it has been serviced regularly
  • the work specified at that point in its service schedule
  • access around the boiler, flue, controls and gas meter
  • a condensate trap or expansion vessel needing attention
  • signs of leaks, poor combustion or deterioration
  • another gas appliance being included in the appointment

A well-maintained older boiler is not automatically a long job, and a modern boiler is not automatically a quick one. The evidence found on the day decides.

Does an LPG Boiler Service Take Longer?

An LPG boiler service takes the same 30 to 45 minutes as a mains gas service when there are no faults. The important difference is not extra time for the sake of it. It is using an engineer with the relevant Gas Safe LPG qualification and carrying out the correct fuel-specific setup and combustion checks.

If you want the more technical reason those checks matter, I have explained why LPG boilers can corrode faster, including what sulphur, acidic condensate and deposits can and cannot explain.

Tell the company whether the LPG comes from cylinders or bulk storage and share the boiler make and model when booking. Vector Heat has a dedicated page for LPG boiler servicing in Lincoln.

Why Does an Oil Boiler Service Usually Take Longer?

Oil servicing is more hands-on. The engineer has a burner, nozzle, deposits and a stored fuel supply to consider as well as the boiler itself.

Depending on the appliance instructions, the work can include:

  • cleaning the boiler and burner
  • replacing the oil nozzle
  • checking the flexible fuel hose and filters where required
  • inspecting accessible parts of the oil tank and supply
  • resetting and checking combustion after the service work

OFTEC's oil-heating service guidance also covers the boiler, burner, flue and accessible fuel-storage and supply components.

At Vector Heat, the oil service work normally takes 60 to 75 minutes, followed by about 15 minutes for the wider checks, service record and paperwork. That makes 75 to 90 minutes overall on a straightforward job. Vector Heat includes a replacement nozzle in its oil boiler servicing in Lincoln, and the exact procedure still follows the boiler manufacturer.

What If the Boiler Already Has a Fault?

A service is planned maintenance for a working boiler. It is not automatically a fault-diagnosis appointment with a service squeezed around the edges.

Tell the company before the visit if the boiler:

  • is locked out or shows a fault code
  • leaks or repeatedly loses pressure
  • makes a new or unusual noise
  • has unreliable heating or hot water
  • has a new oil smell or a visible oil leak

At Vector Heat, a boiler with a known fault is not booked as a routine service. Tell us before the visit and we can allow investigation time, bring a likely part where possible and avoid pretending that two jobs fit neatly into one appointment. Tell us before we arrive and we can turn up slightly less surprised, which is always a treat.

How Much Time Does a Fault Add?

What we find Typical extra time What the time is used for
Fault does not stop the boiler working and needs no immediate action 10-15 minutes Record the problem, explain it, add details to our software and request parts where needed
Fault stops the boiler working or it cannot remain in use 20-25 minutes Record the fault, make the boiler safe as appropriate, explain the position and arrange the next step
A definite quick repair we can complete during the visit Around 30 minutes Carry out the repair, test the boiler and update the record

We only attempt a repair during the service when it is a clear quick fix and the day's bookings allow it. If a fault was not reported, we may not have the time or the part needed.

The visit can then become a fault-investigation appointment, followed by a return visit to fit parts and service the boiler properly. There is little point servicing a boiler that we are about to open again to repair. Repair first, then service and set up the working boiler.

If the appliance is not working normally, use the boiler repair service in Lincoln rather than presenting a breakdown as a routine service.

How to Prepare for a Boiler Service

If the boiler cupboard has become the Christmas-decoration department, clear a working space first. A little preparation saves time that is better spent on the boiler:

  • clear the cupboard or working area around the appliance
  • turn the boiler off about one hour before the appointment so it has time to cool; modern boilers may need less time because they do not run as hot, but an hour is a useful rule
  • make sure the boiler, controls and gas meter are accessible
  • for oil, make the accessible tank and supply components reachable
  • keep the manual, warranty and previous service record nearby if you have them
  • note any fault codes, pressure changes, noises or leaks
  • for LPG, say whether the supply is cylinders or bulk storage

The engineer's arrival window is not the same as the service duration. The service time starts once the engineer arrives and begins work.

FAQ

Can a boiler service take only 20 minutes?

It can on some well-maintained boilers, but only if the manufacturer's routine, tests and service record have all been completed. If a visit lasts under 30 minutes, ask what the boiler required and what was checked. A vague answer or incomplete record is more concerning than the number alone.

How long does a gas boiler service take?

A straightforward gas boiler service normally takes 30 to 45 minutes overall. Around 30 minutes is spent on the service itself, with 10 to 15 minutes for wider checks, recording results and paperwork.

How long does an LPG boiler service take?

A straightforward LPG boiler service normally takes 30 to 45 minutes overall, the same as mains gas. The engineer must also hold the relevant LPG qualification, not only mains gas categories.

How long does an oil boiler service take?

Allow 75 to 90 minutes overall. The service work normally takes 60 to 75 minutes, followed by about 15 minutes for wider checks, the service record and paperwork.

Does a boiler service include repairs?

Not as part of a routine appointment. Report known problems when booking so investigation time can be allowed. If parts are needed, the boiler may need repairing first and servicing afterwards.

Is a boiler service the same as a gas safety check?

No. Servicing maintains the appliance in line with its instructions, while a gas safety check assesses specific safety matters and produces the required record for a landlord. Do not assume one automatically includes the other. Read the boiler service versus gas safety check guide if you need both.

Will I lose heating and hot water during the service?

They may be interrupted while the boiler is operated, tested or isolated. They should be restored at the end of a routine service unless a fault makes the appliance unsafe to use.
