Boiler Pressure Too High: What It Usually Means
Boiler pressure too high is the heating system trying to tell you something important. Unfortunately, it has chosen a tiny dial and possibly a fault code, because apparently plain English was unavailable.

The short answer is this: if your boiler pressure rises sharply when the heating comes on, it is very often an expansion vessel problem. A filling loop left open or letting water through is another common cause. If the pressure rises towards 3 bar, water comes out through the pressure relief valve, and the pressure later drops too low, that is the classic pressure-relief-valve cycle. What Is Normal Boiler Pressure?
Most domestic sealed heating systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. The exact correct pressure depends on the boiler, system and property layout, so treat that as a typical range rather than a commandment carved into a radiator.
When the heating comes on, the pressure usually rises a little because water expands as it heats up. A small rise is normal. A dramatic climb towards 3 bar is not normal. That is the gauge politely clearing its throat before everything gets more annoying.
If the boiler is in a loft, or the system layout is unusual, the correct setup can be different. That is why I do not like giving one universal pressure number and pretending every house is the same. Houses are not the same. Some airing cupboards look like the pipework was based on a game of KerPlunk.
The Most Common Cause: Expansion Vessel Problems
In my experience, boiler pressure that rises too high when the heating comes on is very often related to the expansion vessel.
Liam's rule of thumb from real jobs is:
- around 19 times out of 20, high pressure is related to the expansion vessel
- around 9 times out of 10, an expansion vessel can be repressurised
- sometimes the vessel will not hold pressure and needs replacing
- sometimes it recharges, then loses air again after days, weeks or a month
That is not a laboratory statistic. It is practical fault-finding experience from someone who has spent a deeply unreasonable amount of life looking at boiler pressure gauges.
The expansion vessel is supposed to contain air on one side. When heating water gets hot, it expands. That extra volume should move into the vessel and compress the air. If the air charge is right, the system pressure should only move slightly.
If the vessel has lost its air charge, there is not enough air to compress. So instead of the expansion vessel quietly doing its job, the pressure gauge starts climbing like it has seen the electricity bill.
The Classic High-Then-Low Pressure Pattern
This is the pattern I really want people to recognise:
- The boiler pressure looks fine when cold.
- The heating comes on.
- The pressure rises sharply.
- It gets close to or above 3 bar.
- Water leaves through the pressure relief valve.
- The heating cycle finishes.
- The system cools down.
- The pressure is now too low.
- The boiler shows a low-pressure fault.
- The customer tops it up.
- The whole thing repeats, because apparently the boiler has found a format and decided to stick with it.
This is why people often say, "I keep topping it up, then it drops again." The part they see is the low-pressure fault. The part causing the problem may have happened earlier, when the pressure went too high and water discharged outside.
That is the heating version of seeing a wet floor and blaming the floor. The floor is involved, but it is not the criminal mastermind.

What Happens at 3 Bar?

Do not cap it. Do not block it. Do not try to outsmart it. It is not being dramatic; it is being employed.
The awkward bit is what happens afterwards. Once water has discharged, the system cools, the water contracts, and the boiler pressure can drop too low. The boiler may then stop working for heating and sometimes hot water until it is topped up again.
That is why repeatedly topping up is a clue, not a fix. It is like putting air in a tyre every morning and calling the puncture "managed".
Why Repeated Topping Up Is Not a Proper Fix
Topping up once or twice to get heating or hot water temporarily is understandable. Nobody wants to start boiling kettles like it is a power cut with better Wi-Fi.
But repeated topping up adds fresh water into the heating system. Fresh water brings oxygen. Oxygen can contribute to corrosion in radiators and pipework over time. Radiators are useful when full of water, less useful when slowly turning into a school science project.
If the pressure keeps dropping, the system is losing water or discharging water. The fix is to find why, not to become the boiler's personal hydration assistant.
The Filling Loop Can Also Cause High Pressure
The filling loop is used to top up the heating system. If it is left open, slightly open, or passing water, mains water can keep entering the heating system.
That can make the boiler pressure too high even when the heating is not on. This is the pressure clue that makes the filling loop look suspicious.
Signs of a filling loop issue can include:
- pressure rising when the heating is off
- pressure creeping up slowly over time
- pressure returning high after you reduce it
- the filling loop valve not fully closing
- the filling loop being connected when it should not be
The filling loop is the next common suspect after the expansion vessel. It is also one of those small parts that can cause a big nuisance, which is very on-brand for heating systems.

Pressure rising only when the heating gets hot points more towards expansion vessel behaviour.
Pressure creeping up even when the boiler is cold or off can point more towards the filling loop letting water in.
A Split Cylinder Coil Is Rare, But Worth Knowing About
On systems with an unvented hot water cylinder, there is another possible cause. It is rare, but it matters.
If the cylinder coil splits, higher-pressure water from the cylinder side can pass into the heating circuit. That can push the boiler pressure up even after the usual boiler-side suspects have been checked.
This is not the first thing I would assume. If we started with the rarest faults, every diagnosis would feel like Cluedo, but with more pipe insulation.
But if the pressure keeps rising and the expansion vessel, filling loop and pressure relief valve checks do not explain it, the cylinder coil may need considering. If that has failed, the cylinder usually needs replacing.
Should You Repressurise the Expansion Vessel Yourself?
This is not an article I would turn into a step-by-step DIY expansion vessel guide.
The connection on an expansion vessel is usually a Schrader valve, a bit like a car tyre valve. That makes it look simple. Heating enjoys that sort of trap.
Proper expansion vessel work can involve safely isolating the boiler, dropping the system pressure, checking the vessel, pushing water back out of the vessel, and recharging it to the correct pressure for the boiler and system.
Different boilers and systems can need slightly different pressures. Boiler location matters too. A boiler in a loft may need a different setup from one downstairs.
So yes, many expansion vessels can be repressurised. But the job should be diagnosed and done properly. Otherwise you may spend an afternoon pumping away at the wrong problem, which is tiring and unlikely to fix anything.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
You can safely collect useful information before calling an engineer:
- note the pressure when the boiler is cold
- note the pressure after the heating has been running
- watch whether it climbs towards 3 bar
- check whether it drops too low after cooling
- check whether water is coming from the outside discharge pipe
- check whether the filling loop looks fully closed
- take a photo of the pressure gauge
- write down any fault codes
That information is useful. It helps an engineer arrive with a better idea of the likely fault, rather than just meeting the boiler cold and waiting for it to misbehave like a suspect with legal advice.
Do not remove the boiler casing to investigate. You can do the detective work outside the case. Anything inside the gas boiler is engineer territory.
