How Long Does It Take to Replace a Boiler?

If you only need to know how long to replace a boiler, plan for one full day. A rare, very straightforward combi-to-combi or regular-to-regular swap can take about three quarters of a day.
Converting an older open-vented regular boiler, cylinder and header tanks to a combi normally takes two days. A back-boiler-to-combi conversion normally takes three.

Why Does a Straightforward Boiler Replacement Take a Full Day?
The new boiler is not just hung on the wall and encouraged to get on with it. The old appliance has to come out, the flue and condensate have to comply, the system has to be cleaned properly, controls connected, and the new boiler tested and commissioned.
There is often a little work to do on pumps, valves, pipework or the flue even when the replacement looks simple. The heating and hot water are normally back on before the team leaves that day.
Commissioning and handover count as installation work. Nobody benefits from an engineer disappearing at 4pm while the controls sit there looking decorative. Worcester Bosch's installation guide also treats handover as part of the completed job.
Why Are Some Boiler Replacements Booked for Two Days?
A true older-system-to-combi conversion usually means removing a regular, conventional or heat-only boiler, a hot-water cylinder and working header tanks in the loft. The new combi may go where the old boiler was or into the airing cupboard, and the pipework has to be changed to suit.
You may hear this called a system-to-combi conversion, although the existing boiler is often a regular boiler on an open-vented system. Heating terminology has never knowingly missed an opportunity to use two names for one thing. Our boiler-type guide explains the difference.

Why Does a Back-Boiler Conversion Take Three Days?
Back boilers begin the job by hiding behind a gas fire. Their pipes normally run beside the chimney to an airing cupboard, with a cylinder and header tanks elsewhere in the house.
Replacing one means decommissioning the boiler and fire arrangement, thoroughly cleaning an old system, choosing a new boiler position, running new pipework and fitting a new flue and condensate. For us, a back-boiler-to-combi conversion is normally a three-day job.
How Long Does an Oil Boiler Replacement Take?
A straightforward oil boiler replacement normally still takes one day. We send two engineers because oil boilers are heavy and we need to protect floors, doors and other surfaces while the old and new appliances are moved.
There is a point where “to me, to you” stops being a Chuckle Brothers reference and becomes the lifting plan. Two engineers will normally stay for the day and finish the installation.
What Can Add Time to a Boiler Replacement?
The biggest extras are:
- very dirty system water, which can add up to a day of cleaning and flushing
- moving the boiler or changing the flue route
- fitting a new condensate route
- changing pumps, motorised valves or radiators
- repairing damaged or blocked pipework
- replacing a hot-water cylinder
- adding a new radiator or thermostatic shower
A new shower or extra radiator may be completed during the same visit, but it is additional work rather than part of the basic boiler change. That distinction makes the quotation and timeline much easier to understand.

How Long Will the Heating and Hot Water Be Off?
They will normally be off while the system is drained and the installation is underway. On a standard one-day replacement, both should be working again before the team leaves.
For a two or three-day conversion, ask at the survey what will be available overnight. The answer depends on which parts of the old system have been removed and the order in which the new system is built.
