How Long Does a Boiler Last?
Gas is normally 10-15 years, LPG 9-14 and oil 15-20. The repair history tells you what to do next.

An old boiler is not an Antiques Roadshow find. Age alone does not make it valuable, but it does not make it scrap either.
In my experience, a mains gas boiler will normally last 10 to 15 years, an LPG boiler 9 to 14 years, and an oil boiler 15 to 20 years. Those are useful decision ranges, not expiry dates.
A reliable 15-year-old boiler may still be worth repairing. A 12-year-old boiler that has needed hundreds of pounds spending on it every year may already have answered the question.

These are my field estimates from working on boilers, carrying out surveys and running a boiler-installation team. National heat-policy modelling commonly uses about 15 years for a gas boiler, but no national average can inspect the boiler in your cupboard.
The Better Question: Is This Boiler Still Worth Repairing?
Boilers do not normally reach a birthday and stop. They develop faults, need parts and gradually become less sensible to repair.
When I look at an older boiler, I want to know:
- how good the boiler was when it was installed
- its condition at the latest service or repair
- how often it has needed work
- what the current repair will cost
- whether the common parts for that model have already been replaced
- which expensive parts are likely to fail next
- whether parts remain available
- whether the fault is actually in the boiler or elsewhere in the heating system
- how much useful life the repair is likely to buy
That gives a much better answer than it is 15 years old, replace it

Repair or Replace: My Starting Point

A replacement boiler connected to the same dirty or badly circulating system can inherit the same problem. New casing, old problem. That is not the fresh start anyone paid for.
How Long Does a Gas Boiler Last?
A mains gas boiler will normally last 10 to 15 years. Better boilers can last longer because the original components and construction are generally designed for a longer working life.
Every boiler family has a part that fails more often than its other parts. Sometimes that common repair is cheap and straightforward. Sometimes parts pricing changes as the model gets older. The Ideal Classic fan used to be a good example of a cheap, easy repair; it is now considerably more expensive.
Worcester Bosch also uses 10 to 15 years as a typical range while recognising that quality and maintenance can keep a boiler working longer.
How Long Does a Combi Boiler Last?
A mains-gas combi boiler normally sits within the same 10-to-15-year range. Combi
describes how it supplies hot water, not a separate quality grade.
A combi contains the components needed to produce hot water inside the boiler, so there is more inside it that can eventually need attention. Its condition, manufacturer, installation, system water and repair history still tell you more than the word combi
on the front.
How Long Does an LPG Boiler Last?
My practical range for an LPG boiler is 9 to 14 years. The appliances are often versions of the same boilers used on mains gas, but I regularly find that LPG combustion compartments look more deteriorated when opened for service or repair.
I do not put that down to one simple cause. The credible explanation is a combination of fuel chemistry, acidic condensate, deposits, combustion setup, maintenance and the materials inside the boiler. Current UK evidence does not prove that normal LPG simply contains more sulphur than mains gas.

How Long Does an Oil Boiler Last?
Oil boilers often last around five years longer than gas boilers in my experience, giving a practical range of 15 to 20 years. Plenty continue beyond that when the heat exchanger is sound and parts remain available.
One reason may be the annual oil-service routine. We change the nozzle every year, inspect and clean the burner and boiler, then reset combustion. People who miss oil services often learn quite quickly why the nozzle and deposits matter.
Oil boilers also commonly have large steel heat exchangers containing more water than a compact gas-boiler heat exchanger. Their construction, slower temperature changes and smaller collection of compact internal components may all contribute to their longer life. That is my field judgement, not a promise that every oil boiler will outlive every gas boiler.

Does Annual Servicing Make a Boiler Last Longer?
It improves the chances. A service can identify combustion issues, leaks, pressure problems, worn components and maintenance due under the manufacturer's instructions before they become larger faults.
It does not make a boiler immortal. There is no stamp in a service book powerful enough to stop every pump, fan, sensor, valve or heat exchanger from ageing.
The useful approach is to keep the service record and ask the engineer to explain changes over time. A fault found against a history is far more informative than a fault viewed on its own. Read what a boiler service should involve and how long it normally takes.
How Do I Find Out How Old My Boiler Is?
Look for the make, model, serial number and data badge. Some manufacturers print a date; others hide it inside a serial or fabrication code.

Yes. Oil boilers commonly reach that age, and a well-made gas boiler can too. Age alone does not prove it is efficient to repair, safe to use or ready for replacement; condition and repair history still decide.
