Booked with Vector Heat
Your heat pump survey: what to expect
What I need to see, what I will ask, and how to get ready.
Published
Thanks for booking a heat pump survey with me, Liam from Vector Heat. I will look around the whole home and talk through what you want from the heating.
I will most likely use Heat Geek's survey software and propose an installation through their MCS-certified scheme. You still have me and the Vector team doing the work; I will explain that route before you decide.
Before I arrive
- Access to every room and radiator for measuring and scanning.
- Access to the boiler, cylinder, electricity meter and consumer unit.
- An accessible outside tap for water checks.
- Any building plans or insulation paperwork you already have.
Please be available to walk round with me. You know how the house feels in winter; the measurements do not tell me everything.
Why use Heat Geek?
Heat Geek is a heating training and installation network. Their software helps me measure and design your system. On the Heat Geek installation route, they oversee the work and MCS certification, the quality scheme for renewable installations.
The main extra benefit is the Heat Geek Guarantee. For an installation through their scheme, it backs the quoted overall heating and hot-water efficiency, assessed over 12 months. Covered underperformance is put right at their cost, subject to the guarantee terms, including monitoring and maintenance requirements.
You also keep our normal Vector Heat workmanship warranty.
What I will do during the survey
- Start outside. Where would you like the heat pump? We check space, airflow, noise, drainage and pipe routes.
- Go into every room. I measure every radiator and use the iPad to scan the walls, windows and doors for the heat-loss calculation.
- Check hot water. Baths, showers, cylinder space and a pressure/flow test at your outside tap.
- Check electrics. I photograph the main cut-out fuse by the electricity meter and check the consumer unit and cable routes. Leave covers and seals alone.

Things to tell me
- When was the house built? What insulation does it have, including the loft, walls and floors?
- Has it been extended? Roughly when, and are you planning more building work or insulation?
- Which rooms are uncomfortable? Tell me about cold rooms, overheating, draughts and radiators that do not work properly.
- Do you want to move the cylinder? Tell me your preferred position before we plan the pipework.
Replacing an oil boiler?
Let me know roughly how much oil is left and what you would like to do with the tank and remaining fuel.
We can pump suitable remaining oil to a neighbour's tank up to 30 metres away. Tell me if that would help. We will check the tank, spare capacity, access and permission before agreeing the transfer.

Zero Disrupt: change what needs changing
Heat Geek Zero Disrupt helps find the necessary changes for the performance you choose, instead of replacing radiators automatically.
- Look at rooms together. It can balance an undersized radiator against spare output nearby, where heat can move between those rooms. A radiator elsewhere cannot simply cancel out a cold, closed-off room.
- Find the worthwhile upgrades. One small radiator changed for a much larger one can work better than two slightly larger replacements, if the layout allows both rooms to benefit.
- Check it against your experience. I can adjust the proposal. Tell me about draughts, cold rooms and doors you keep closed. We discuss the options, and you have the final say on the work you agree to.
Two quick questions
What if I do not know the insulation or extension dates?
Tell me what you know. Existing plans, an EPC or insulation paperwork can help if you have them, but you do not need to commission new documents for the visit.
What if I have no outside tap or cannot access something?
Let us know before the appointment so we can plan another way to check it. Do not move heavy furniture or open electrical equipment yourself.
After the visit
We go through the equipment, positions and proposed changes before you decide.
